I don’t really know what the answer is, but I do know that I wish we had a better way to help emergency medical services providers deal with depression. There are only a few things that haven’t changed in the many years since I was a baby EMT, and one of them is the slow drip of suicides. Sometimes it’s your buddy. Sometimes it’s your employee. Sometimes it’s your partner’s best friend.
Things aren’t as hopeless as they may feel, but that’s hard to see in the moment.
@mcnado We have no viable understanding of -- fuck DSM-V -- clinical depression. And when we confront situational depression, we tend to think of it as sadness, which it is not. Sadness is a *feeling*, and feeling is what depressives most lack.
In a non-emergency situation, sometimes, the med will help. But you're tryna fix a pocket watch with a sledgehammer. Sometimes we get lucky with that. Other times, not.
